Shaping the Future: Insights from a Transformative Two Weeks
Nov 7, 2025
By Strahan McCarten, eStruxture SVP, Strategy and Business Operations
The convergence of global digital demand, energy policy, and responsible resource utilization is fundamentally reshaping the data center market. Over the past two weeks, I had the privilege of engaging with government officials, hyperscalers, and industry leaders at four distinct events, providing an invaluable 360-degree view of the opportunities and complexities facing our sector.
My participation as both a panelist and a moderator at these critical industry forums: the Global Data Center and Cloud Expo, Powering the Digital Economy, a Clean Prosperity event, and the Invest Alberta webinar was focused on articulating the role of data centers as essential infrastructure for the future of sovereign AI and digital economies.
Key Strategic Engagements and Themes
My engagements underscored that our industry's progress hinges on a proactive, cooperative approach to policy and sustainability. The primary themes discussed across these diverse forums were consistent: energy policy, renewable integration, data sovereignty, and responsible investment. The overarching goal is to communicate our active engagement to attract sovereign AI and data center investments that benefit provinces, municipalities, and regions.
1. Global Data Center and Cloud Expo: Power Sourcing and Sustainability
At the Global Data Center and Cloud Expo, I participated in a panel focused on power sourcing and sustainability. The discussion, which included Sam Oosterhoff, Niagara West MPP and Associate Minister for Energy-Intensive Industry , along with representatives from Enerflex, Canada Post, and Gloriosa Energy Solutions, centered on the efforts of data centers to be "good grid citizens".
- Core takeaway: Continued, sustainable data center development requires collaboration with government and regulatory bodies. This partnership ensures responsible grid usage and investment, aligning our growth with the province's priorities.
2. Powering the Digital Economy: Hyperscale and Renewables
I moderated the "Powering the Digital Economy" panel, an event organized by the Renewable Energy Association. This was a crucial discussion that highlighted the interesting intersection of hyperscale customers and the renewable energy sector.
- Key Participants: Patrick Lo from Microsoft , Nicole Foster from Amazon , and Dan Balaban from Augur AI and founder of Greengate. Mr. Balaban's experience with Greengate provided a perspective on delivering renewable solutions at hyperscale.
- Core takeaway: The importance of renewables and data sovereignty were central to the discussion. The scale of hyperscaler demand is a powerful driver for the industry to deliver large-scale renewable energy solutions.
3. Clean Prosperity Event: Policy and Community Engagement
The Clean Prosperity event focused intensely on energy policy. Here, I represented the perspective of the data center customer and the industry at large.
- Core takeaway: A core focus of the discussion was how to ensure data centers remain an industry that is viewed positively by ratepayers and citizens. This requires active community engagement to address questions and build trust. We must cooperate and be transparent to ensure our power applications and future development are supported by the community. I praised the Ontario regulator for establishing policies that make it clear about how data centers can connect to the transmission network, ensuring responsible grid usage and driving investment.
4. Invest Alberta Webinar: Investment and Infrastructure
The Invest Alberta webinar, which featured a panelist from Invest Alberta and a representative from Deep Sky, a carbon capture company, provided a technical deep-dive into investment opportunities and potential pitfalls for data centers in the region.
- Technical Focus: The discussion was highly technical, with knowledgeable attendees posing very detailed questions about energy infrastructure. The involvement of Deep Sky, which focuses on passive carbon capture and storage, provided a unique lens on environmental solutions in the data center context.
- Core takeaway: This engagement reinforced the need for technical expertise in energy infrastructure and the importance of mitigating risks for significant investment. The detailed, technical nature of the questions confirmed a strong, sophisticated level of interest in data center development within the Albertan energy market.
A Strategic Conclusion: Showcasing Engagement and Leadership
The overall strategy moving forward is to highlight our presence and active role in these critical national discussions. These four events in a short period demonstrate that we are deeply engaged with all key stakeholders, from government officials like MPP Oosterhoff, to hyperscalers, to industry thought leaders.
The main message is that eStruxture is actively participating in shaping the future of the data center market. This engagement is centered on energy policy and responsible resource utilization, positioning us as the strategic partner of choice for attracting sovereign AI and data center investments that benefit Canada.
